Haitian Metal Art BUTTERFLY 3D Created From Re-cycled Steel Oil Drums by Wilson Etienne
Wonderful Wall Sculpture Display Inside or Outdoors Imported From Haiti & Available In The U.S.A. (SM349)
Beautiful and finely detailed, this 3D rendition of butterflies and flowers is an eye catching accent piece for any home, garden or patio.
Consider the talent, imagination and determination required to transform a used 55 gallon oil drum into a beautiful work of art, a wall hanging to grace any home or backyard get together. The small village of Croix-des-Bouquets, northeast of Port-Au-Prince, is the center of activity of Haitian arts. Here the clang clang of metal on metal, the chisels banging out the sculptures is a constant music and livlihood for these skilled artisans. The subject's pattern is drawn on the metal, then chisels, dies and a large hammer are used to cut and mold the designs. The steel’s rough edges are smoothed, and the artist beats out the convex and the concave shapes. When the highly intricate sculpture is completed and thoroughly satisfactory to the artist, he signs his name proudly with a small chisel. A uniquely Haitian form of representative artwork, it is an art of multiple meanings and the Haitian artists’ imaginations are spectacularly fertile. Finished pieces are sealed against rust for protection, and may be re-sealed as necessary.
